The car pulled over and we got out. Another car had joined us, and a delicate, slight man in square glasses emerged, more beautiful than handsome, feminine, with slim hips and long hair, a shy smile on his face. He glided over and kissed Talitha hello before she introduced him to me. He seemed shy, and sweet, turning to me with exquisite poise.

“Bonsoir,” he greeted with his French accent. “Good evening. I am Yves.”

“How do you do,” I replied, the very model of a well-brought-up girl, but inside, my heart was hammering. Still, he seemed shy and sweet, and I wished I could think of something to say to him to show him I wasn’t intimidated, except... I was intimidated.

“This is Pierre,” he said, as his partner stepped forward and shook my hand with a warm smile, helping me to relax.

They were with the Comtesse, who I had clearly not impressed the night before.

“Hello.” I gave her a smile as she stared at me without a shred of recognition, barely acknowledging me before turning away. Before tonight, I would have been devastated by her curtness, would have felt like she’d seen through to my soul and knew I wasn’t good enough. But Talitha had just offered me more than a job—she had offered me validation, offered to make me part of their world. If Talitha thought I was good enough, I was. I shook off the shame that threatened to engulf me.
